Phase 3

We believe that all our young people need a set of skills and attributes that will prepare them for adult life, further learning and employment. With this in mind the outcomes from the ‘Preparation for Adulthood framework’ are mapped and threaded throughout our programme to enable pupils to experience outstanding opportunities for future planning, transition and progression. Pupils have access to a programme with meaningful opportunities that address the learning needs in an individualised way, as they prepare for adulthood.

Phase 3 is focused on Preparing for Adulthood. The aim is to support young people into adulthood with a range of skills that can lead to their best next step The curriculum is based around the 4 areas:

  • Community Inclusion
  • Independent Living
  • Good Health
  • Employability

All pupils also continue to develop Functional skills which are both embedded into the curriculum and through stand alone lessons. Each Evolve and Establish class will also have a PE lesson with a specialist teacher each week.

The final part of the curriculum includes vocational subjects such as; Enterprise, Hospitality and Catering, Sport, Duke of Edinburgh, Arts Award and Creative Performance. Pupils will have the opportunity to participate in a range of these subjects during their time in Phase 3 depending on the needs of individual pupils.

Throughout the curriculum; developing independence is key and embedded in all activities. We strive to provide a variety of opportunities to generalise these skills which will be transferred into adulthood and employment where it is appropriate.

Lessons are delivered both onsite and in the community as we feel this provides the most meaningful learning opportunities for our young people to be able to generalise and apply learnt skills into real life situations that will benefit them moving forward. These community learning opportunities are implemented in a multitude of ways to suit the individual pupil.

In order to support this preparation for adulthood, each pupil will have access to learning at our Bungalow. This is set up to represent a home environment where pupils participate in the Shop, Cook and Eat programme. This involves the process of planning, buying ingredients and cooking a meal with others as well as household tasks as part of the independent living programme.

Because as a Phase we focus on independence in all aspects of daily life, there is emphasis on learning in the community. For this reason all pupils who come to Phase 3 require a bus pass which can be applied for following this link – Apply Online – My Bus Pass.

We have a careers team at The Chiltern School who work closely with the pupils in Phase 3 to support the transition process from school to college or alternative provisions. They work hard to develop pupils’ understanding around their personal characteristics and qualities and what this could offer to a work environment. In addition to this pupils go through an application process and preparation for interviews or next steps. The team also tailor work experiences to individuals interests and needs which link with the pathway the pupil is intending to take. This supports the employability skills within the preparation for adulthood curriculum.

The Careers Team do a ‘careers chat’ with our pupils to gain an insight into interests and aspirations. The outcomes of these chats are documented and include advice for parents and families for next steps including links to key information.

I am thrilled that this school is available to the children who need it. Thank you.
