Learning Pathways

Our school is organised in a way to promote the best learning opportunities and most suitable approaches to meet the individual needs of our pupils. This ensures children and young people are taught in line with their developmental stage and that learning makes sense to them all of the time.

Pupils are supported in Learning Pathways. They are grouped according to the predominant needs and learning style, this allows for the teaching styles, provision, curriculum and environment to be adapted to best meet the needs of the group.

For example, our young people who have profound physical, medical and learning needs have learning spaces that provide an immersive sensory experience, where we have installed ceiling track hoists so they can be moved easily in and out of equipment in order to integrate therapy and medical interventions (Physiotherapy/ Occupational therapy) into their daily experience rather than having to go somewhere separately to facilitate this.

We have 3 Learning Pathways

• Physical and Sensory
• Communication and Interaction
• Cognition and Learning

We believe in stage not age education, pupils will join a class with pupils that will be developmentally not chronologically at the same stage.

We do not have traditional year groups or Key Stage classes. We move pupils at the right time knowing the curriculum offered for each phase.

All pupils in Year 2 and below are taught together as Early Transitions, this allows for holistic assessment of needs and a basis for transition. We have 4 phases across the school.

• Early Transitions – Pupils that join us for before Year 2 will go into our Early Transitions department.
• Phase 1 – Pupils in Phase 1 will generally be considered to be in the primary age group (Key Stage 1 and 2).
• Phase 2 – Pupils in Phase 2 will generally be considered to be in the secondary age group (Key Stage 3 and 4).
• Phase 3 – Pupils in Phase 3 will generally be considered to be Post 16 age group.
